Elastic (NYSE: ESTC) reported its first quarter of fiscal 2027 after the close on August 27, 2026. The next session’s tape was decisive: shares closed up 19.31% at $99.91, according to Yahoo Finance. The move was driven by two things the buy side had wanted for several quarters — an acceleration in backlog growth and a record quarter for large-customer additions — layered on top of a credible AI product story anchored by a new OpenAI collaboration.
The headline: cRPO growth stepped up to 21%
The most-watched number on the release was current remaining performance obligations — the subscription backlog expected to convert into revenue in the next 12 months. cRPO landed at $1.153 billion, up 21% year-over-year (20% on a constant-currency basis), per the 8-K exhibit filed with the SEC. That is a meaningful step up from recent trend and is the leading indicator analysts use to model forward revenue. Total remaining performance obligations, which includes multi-year backlog, rose an even sharper 27% to $1.854 billion.
CEO Ash Kulkarni framed it plainly in the release: “Elastic delivered a strong start to fiscal 2027, beating our guidance across all key metrics. AI is reshaping the enterprise technology stack… Our record quarter-over-quarter net customer additions to our >$100K ACV cohort and continued strength in cRPO and RPO growth reflect the durability of that demand.”
Q1 FY27 by the numbers
| Metric | Q1 FY27 | Q1 FY26 | Y/Y |
|---|---|---|---|
| Total revenue | $478.1M | $415.3M | +15% |
| Subscription revenue | $448.7M | $388.6M | +15% |
| Sales-led subscription revenue | $399M | $338M | +18% |
| cRPO (12-mo backlog) | $1.153B | $0.953B | +21% |
| RPO (total backlog) | $1.854B | $1.460B | +27% |
| GAAP operating loss | -$24M (-5%) | n/a | n/a |
| Non-GAAP operating income | $77M (16.2%) | n/a | n/a |
| GAAP diluted EPS | -$0.16 | n/a | n/a |
| Non-GAAP diluted EPS | $0.70 | n/a | n/a |
| Operating cash flow | $132M | n/a | n/a |
| Adjusted free cash flow | $143M (30%) | n/a | n/a |
Two things stand out. Sales-led subscription growth — the metric Elastic flags as the cleanest read on enterprise demand because it excludes monthly self-serve cloud — accelerated to 18%, three points faster than reported subscription growth. And adjusted free cash flow of $143 million on $478 million of revenue is a 30% FCF margin, well above the guided full-year mark of ~21.5%. That is the number that shifts the conversation from “growth software” to “Rule-of-40 software.”
The customer scorecard: record net adds at the top of the funnel
Elastic added ~80 net new customers with more than $100,000 in annual contract value — its highest sequential add on record. The full base is now over 1,800 large customers, up from 1,720+ last quarter and 1,550+ a year ago (~16% YoY growth in the cohort). Net expansion rate was ~111%, meaning existing customers as a group spent 11% more than a year earlier.
The AI product story: OpenAI, Deductive AI, and agentic ops
Elastic used the quarter to reposition itself squarely in the AI infrastructure conversation. The release named four moves worth calling out:
- OpenAI collaboration. Elastic announced an integration that brings OpenAI’s advanced reasoning models to Elasticsearch across AI applications, security operations, and observability — a deliberate pitch that Elastic is the retrieval-and-context layer of choice for enterprise AI stacks.
- Deductive AI acquisition. Elastic closed a bolt-on acquisition of Deductive AI, an AI-powered investigation platform focused on production-issue root-cause analysis. It folds into Elastic Observability and reinforces the “agentic SRE” narrative.
- Agentic Kubernetes investigations and MCP-based observability skills. New workflows that ingest logs, metrics, anomalies, and cluster events and automatically surface root causes.
- Columnar Mode and VectorDB index mode. Under-the-hood engine work — Columnar Mode targets metrics and log analytics cost/performance; VectorDB index mode plus DiskBBQ auto-calibration is meant to make vector search work out of the box without tuning.
Elastic was also named a Leader in the 2026 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Observability Platforms (its third consecutive year in that spot) and a Leader in the IDC MarketScape for Worldwide SIEM 2026 — signals that matter for enterprise procurement short-lists in observability and security.
The guidance: not a raise, but a hold at a good level
| Guidance | Q2 FY27 | Full-year FY27 |
|---|---|---|
| Total revenue | $486–$487M (+14.9%) | $1.998–$2.010B (+15.2%) |
| Sales-led sub revenue | $407.5–$408.5M (+16.9%) | $1.682–$1.694B (+17.4%) |
| Non-GAAP operating margin | ~19.0% | ~19.4% |
| Non-GAAP diluted EPS | $0.80–$0.82 | $3.29–$3.37 |
| Adjusted FCF margin | n/g | ~21.5% |
Elastic did not headline a “raise” — the FY27 revenue range of $1.998–2.010 billion matches the range set at the start of the year. What moved is the mix inside it: sales-led subscription growth is tracking a full point ahead of total revenue growth, non-GAAP operating margin is guided to expand roughly three points versus FY26, and the ~21.5% FCF margin target held. The market read the hold as an implicit raise given the cRPO acceleration underneath it.
Capital returns and analyst reaction
Elastic deployed $40 million on its share-repurchase program in Q1, buying back ~0.8 million shares at an average price of $49.71 — well below the current $99.91 print. The program, authorized in October 2025 at up to $500 million, retains significant capacity, and cash-and-securities finished at $1.461 billion. On the sell-side, TD Cowen raised its target to $70 from $55 on August 25 while keeping a Hold, per Yahoo Finance; Oppenheimer wrote after the print that Elastic was “poised for further fiscal 2027 upside.” Targets across the Street will need to be marked higher in coming sessions.
Puts and takes to watch
- Comps get tougher. Q2 FY27 revenue growth is guided to ~15%, essentially flat with Q1. The cRPO acceleration is real, but the sales-led subscription line will be the cleanest read on whether new-logo momentum is durable.
- GAAP operating margin is still negative. Q1 GAAP margin was -5%; management guides GAAP margin to turn positive in Q2. The gap between GAAP and non-GAAP is driven mostly by stock-based compensation, which investors will watch as the share count moves.
- Vector-search competition is heating up. Elastic’s VectorDB and Columnar Mode work is aimed directly at the ground where Snowflake, MongoDB Atlas Vector Search, and open-source challengers are trying to convert workloads. Sustaining the >$100K ACV add rate through FY27 is the test.
